Anna Jo Reese Johnson's Obituary
Anna Jo Reese Johnson was born in the spring of her life, March 22, 1939 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX to the parentage of G. B. and Juanita Reese. She attended the presently named Versia Williams Elementary School and graduated from the renown I. M. Terrell High School in 1957. After high school, Anna Jo continued her studies at Huston-Tillotson College (now known as Huston-Tillotson University) in Austin, TX from which she graduated in 1961. While at Huston-Tillotson, she pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1957.
After graduation, Anna Jo returned to Fort Worth and began her career teaching third grade at Morningside Elementary School; she became a Hoffman Reading teacher, Reading Specialist and eventually a Librarian. She also taught fifth grade at Benbrook Elementary School for five years. As a Librarian, she worked at Van Zandt-Guinn, Carroll Peak, Benbrook and Maudrie Walton Elementary Schools. She retired from Maudrie Walton in 2000.
Anna Jo married Winston Johnson and they had a boy, Courtney Wayne and a girl, Amy Brianna. Courtney and Amy grew up, got married and blessed Anna Jo and Winston with three lovely grandchildren – Frank, Jr., Anna Riley and Kalani Clarke –the apples of Anna Jo’s eyes.
She was a member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church. There she served as a Sunday School teacher, Chairperson of the Centennial and was on the Evaluation Committee for Worship Service. Anna Jo also received the Special Mission recognition from the Office of the United Methodist Women National Office. Anna Jo was very active in her community and received numerous awards from Fort Worth ISD, the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens, YMCA and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She also traveled extensively during her lifetime throughout the US, Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe and Africa.
Anna Jo departed this life in the winter season of her life, September 20, 2022. She leaves to cherish fond memories: her husband of 46 years, Winston; son, Courtney Johnson (Karole), daughter, Amy Johnson; stepson, Winston Wayne Johnson (Alisa); three grandchildren, Frank Patrick, Jr., Anna Riley Holmes and Kalani Clarke Johnson; two brothers, Eddie Charles and Donnie Reese; one brother-in-law, Terry Johnson (Cheryl); four sisters-in-law, Vernell Carter (Stedson), Diane Morris (Jerry) and Cynthia Marshall (Gary), Brenda and Beverly Johnson and Darlene Pope; a host of nieces and nephews; and her special life-long friends: Nancy Henry, Mary Gray, Minnie Stein Barriteau and Geneva Lee. Rest in peace our loved one.
