Christine Reginia "Gina" Porter's Obituary
Christine Reginia Porter, 60, was born October 13, 1963, in Newport News, VA to Dante and Hermenia Porter. Her close friends and family would call her “Gina” or “Ginababy”. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
Christine attended Newport News Public schools, graduating from Ferguson High School in 1982. She began her career as a pharmacy technician at Revco Drug Store, which we know today as CVS Pharmacy in 1984. In May 1988, Christine gave birth to her one and only daughter Sentara Gabrielle at the newly named Sentara Hampton General Hospital. This would be one of her favorite stories to share. The following year, Christine began working for Sentara’s hospital pharmacy, where she would retire in 2021 after 30+ years of service. She made lifelong friends at Sentara Healthcare.
Gina was multi-talented. She could dance like a “Soul Train” dancer and sing. She even had a creative side: writing poetry, drawing, fashion and home décor styling. She could cook – her specialty being homemade chicken pot pie. She never had formal training in any of these talents; she was just inherently gifted. She had a knack for bringing people together; sure to entertain whomever she was around with jokes and laughter. Christine left us with many memories of fun vacations and warm family gatherings.
Christine became one of Jehovah’s Witnesses in her teens. She joyfully preached to others about the Good News of God’s Kingdom. She faithfully attended the Newport News South congregation until she moved to Texas to be cared for by her daughter. She attended the meetings locally until her health declined.
She found much pleasure trying out restaurants, watching music programs, taking many vacations and weekly shopping trips to Roses, Gabe’s, and Cato. She enjoyed spending quality time with Sentara, her grandsons who affectionally called her “Grandma Shawty” and her grand fur baby Gizmo Porter. Sadly, she was placed on hospice in April 2024. After a valiant battle with early onset dementia, Christine peacefully passed away on September 18, 2024, at home in Ft Worth, Texas. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hermenia Porter; sister, Nevonza Porter; brother, Dante Porter Jr., and nephew, Brent Clark.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory, her father, Dante Porter; daughter, Sentara Porter; three grandchildren, Cordaro Williams Jr., Alex and Evan Booth; sisters, Belinda Clark (Melvin) and Rose Benita Hamby (Jerry); brother, Eric Porter; nephew, Torre Clark (Ariel); niece, Stacey Clark; “sister-cousin”, Brenda Burt; spiritual sister, Antoinette Tynes and a host of relatives, spiritual brothers and sisters, and friends.
Christine was laid to rest at Azleland Memorial Park and Cemetary in Azle, TX on September 20th, 2024. Her celebration of life will be October 4th, 2024, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 804 41st St, Newport News, VA 23607 at 11am. The repast will immediately follow the service at Sandy Bottom Nature Park located at 1255 Big Bethel Rd, Hampton, VA 23669.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes monetary donations as an expression of sympathy.
