Mrs. Geryl Dean Tucker's Obituary
Geryl Dean Tucker passed away peacefully on May 14, 2026, at the age of 88, surrounded by her beloved family at her home. Born on May 27, 1937, in Haynesville, Louisiana, she was the cherished daughter of Emmett and Catherine Taylor. Geryl's life was a testament to love, education, and community service, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.
Geryl's journey in life was one of dedication and passion. She graduated from Longview Negro High School in 1956. Her love for education led her to Wiley College, where she was a majorette and became a proud member of the Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha in 1957. Her pursuit of knowledge did not stop there, as she earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University in 1974.
In 1956, on the tennis courts of Wiley College, Geryl met the love of her life, James E. Tucker. Their love story blossomed, culminating in their marriage in 1959. Together, they embarked on a beautiful journey, moving to Kayenta, Arizona in 1962, where Geryl began her illustrious teaching career. Her dedication to education and her nurturing spirit flourished in Tuba City, Arizona, where she became a Master Teacher, touching countless lives with her love and leadership. After retiring from teaching in Arizona, Geryl and James returned to Longview, Texas, where she continued to walk in her purpose, teaching for Longview ISD from 1996 until her retirement in 2006.
Geryl's commitment extended beyond the classroom. She was a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, serving alongside her chapter members of Epsilon Zeta Omega, and a Life Member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, where she held roles as State President and International Secretary. Her leadership and compassion were evident in her roles as a Girl Scout Leader and coach for basketball and softball during her time in Tuba City. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was an active member of Wesley-McCabe United Methodist Church in Longview and later Friendship West Baptist Church in Dallas, Texas.
Geryl was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett and Catherine Taylor, her son Michael Tucker, great-grandson Lexon Medearis, and brother Bobby Ray Taylor. She leaves behind a legacy of love through her surviving family: her devoted husband, James E. Tucker; her daughter, Michelle Meaderis; her grandchildren, Candace Peoples (Demarcus), Michael Tucker II, and Robert Meaderis III (Chelsea); and her cherished great-grandchildren, London, Lexa, and Cannon Meaderis, Dylan and Demi Peoples. She is also survived by her brothers, Lonnie Taylor, Emmett Taylor, and Dale Taylor, and her sisters, Louise Haley, Elouise Smith, Joyce Shirlee (Paul), and Kay Francis Wright. Geryl's life was a beacon of love, education, and service.
Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith touched the hearts of those around her. Her legacy will forever inspire her family, friends, and community. As we celebrate her life, we hold close the memories and the lessons she imparted, knowing that her spirit lives on in each of us.
