Helen Smith's Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen Smith on August 30, 2023 in Mansfield, TX.
Helen was born on August 6th, 1934 in Maben, Mississippi to the late Avery Dumas and the late Asoler Henderson. She was the middle sibling of five children: Mae Ola, Clyde, Irene, and Richard. While Helen was born in Mississippi, her family moved to Junction City, Kansas, where she was raised and attended school.
Helen eventually settled in Pittsburg, California, where she worked in the retail industry for many years. After retirement, Helen followed her children to the Dallas-Fort-Worth area, which is where she spent the remainder of her time.
During her formative years, Helen began taking sewing classes at her high school, leading her to become an exceptionally skilled seamstress. Throughout her life, she was well known for using her sewing talents for home decorating projects, school dance outfits, costumes, or the occasional hemline adjustment. For Helen, these acts weren’t just a kind gesture, they were acts of love! In addition to her sewing skills, Helen was also known to make a mean dish of deviled eggs, which brought enjoyment to many of her family and friends. Helen was always available to anyone that needed her, and her door was always open.
A word that many have used to describe Helen was “spunky”. Even in her senior years, her unbridled enthusiasm to have fun was infectious to those around her.
Helen was a strong and devoted Christian woman and was most recently a member of Grace Fellowship Church in Grand Prairie, TX.
Helen was a loving mother to her children Earl Chargois Jr., the late Tony Chargois (Michelle), Mario Smith (Mindy), Desmond Smith (Kristin) & La Tanya Lynch (Michael).
She was also a devoted sister to the late Mae Ola (Austin) Purdie, Clyde Austin, Irene Dumas, the late Richard Dumas, and was also a loving grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend to a host of others. She will be greatly missed.
