Horace Lee Johnson's Obituary
Life Reflections
Horace Lee Johnson
Horace Lee Johnson was born in Fort Worth, Texas on December 24, 1951 to Lavon and Ivory Mae Johnson. He was educated in the Fort Worth Independent School District and graduated from the historical I.M. Terrell High School in 1970.
Upon graduation, he worked as a surveyor for the City of Fort Worth but continued his education by attending Williams Barber College. His stint as a barber ignited his entrepreneurial spirit that led to the founding and distribution of Vern’s Super Groom and a line of haircare products for almost 40 years. While being a small business owner, Horace also enjoyed a 36-year career as a production worker at Miller Brewing Company where he held many positions but retired as a Quality Assurance Technician in 2012.
Horace was well known for his melodic voice. He expressed his love of music by crooning with his group Mixed Emotions as a young man and singing with Sons of the Father during retirement. He used his voice to woo and serenade Beverly Johnson, his wife of 30 years. For the past three decades, the pair has been inseparable and did everything together. As companions, they enjoyed fellowshipping with family and friends; Horace was no stranger to the swing out floor or to the domino table. "Pops" also loved spending time with his kids from the Fat Stock Show to trips abroad.
While he knew how to have a good time with others, he relished in the solitude of manicuring his lawn. His yard was his pride and joy. Whenever anyone stopped by his home, they would find Horace outside where he felt communion with God and never tired of learning new things. He was a DIY connoisseur who frequented Home Depot and Lowe’s and there was not much that he could not do. There was even less that he would not do for others, however. He enjoyed repairing, making, building, doing, and teaching anything. Everyone knew, if you needed him, he would come.
He will be remembered for his helpful nature as much as he will be remembered for his tough love. Those closest to him knew that Horace believed in doing what is right according to the Scripture that served as his compass. He held people to the same high standards that he also held for himself. The entirety of his life was a crescendo of wisdom about both earthly and heavenly matters. Horace was a member of his childhood church, Zion Rest Missionary Baptist Church, until he joined Mount Olive Baptist Church in 1995. He was a faithful servant whose ministries at Mount Olive included singing and leading songs in the Male Chorus, providing compassionate assistance through the Bereavement Committee, and serving the congregation as a member of the Deacon Board and Executive Deacon Board.
Horace was preceded in death by his parents, Lavon and Ivory Mae Johnson, son Frederick Johnson, and siblings Charlie Mae Pope and Howard Pope. Left to continue his legacy is his wife, Beverly K. Johnson; sons Aldreon Johnson, Adrian Johnson, Adric Johnson, and a daughter, Karmen Bell (Geno); grandchildren, Jazz Johnson (Aisha), Mason Nelson, Nicholas Bell, Brooklyn Johnson, Lauren Bell, Amaya Johnson, Drädyn Johnson; great-grandchildren Sabian Johnson and Sidian Johnson; uncle, Thomas Earl Williams; siblings Winston Johnson (Anna), Vernell Carter (Stedson), Terry Johnson (Cheryl), Brenda Johnson, Diane Morris (Jerry), and Cynthia Marshall (Gary); sister-in-law Darlene Pope. Horace will also continue to be cherished by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends
