Mother Ida Mae Woods' Obituary
Our beloved, 100-year-old Mother and Grandmother, was adoringly known as “Mother, Madea, and Dear.”
Ida Mae Woods was born on October 15, 1923, in Freestone County to Penola Young and Buster Denweed. Shortly after her mother’s passing, Ida lived with her extended family, PJ and Lizzy Walker, and her brother, CJ in Kernes, Texas. Ida’s grandmother lived to celebrate 106 years of life. Ida was blessed with four beautiful children: Naomi Ruth Walker, George Washington Hill, Penola Clara Hill, and Robert Donnell Hill.
In 1944, Ida moved to Fort Worth, Texas where she began her membership at Pilgrim Valley Missionary Baptist Church. During her time at church, she served as a Youth Sponsor, Culinary Committee Chair, President of Mary Circle, Senior Usher Board, Secretary of Adult Women Bible Class No. 1, and Treasurer of the General Missionary Society. In the community, she was well-known for preparing delicious soul food at Drakes Cafeteria and was an outstanding member of the Westside Charity Club. Ida was a virtuous woman who loved God, her “church family,” her community, and traveling with her family and friends.
Ida was a remarkable matriarch of our family and a gifted life teacher. Her “Pearls of Wisdom” shall always be admired by her wonderful family and friends to live on within us.
Ida Mae Woods peacefully surrendered to the Master’s call and transitioned from life to eternity, Thursday, February 8, 2024.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, grandmother, and three children. Her granddaughter, Carla Phillips and son-in-law, Julius Owens Sr.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories; her loving daughter, Penola Owens; her grandchildren, Trina Hinds (George), Mechell Guy (Michael), Nedra Simmons (Louis), Keric McGowan (Arista), and Raylyn Hampton; her great-grandchildren, Demario Smith, Chris Hunter (LaShunda), Mia Guy, Kerion & Kendall McGowan, and Dayja & Driauna Smith; her great-great grandchildren, Christian, Carsen, Carlie, and Cassidy Hunter; her great-great-great grandchildren, Maurielle & Maiselle Crawford; her grandchild, Rachel Madison; her special daughters, Mildred Fisher, Evelyn Taulton, and Sharon Garrett; and blessed to have a host of other special relatives and dear friends.
“May the work I’ve done speak for me!”
