Kathy Phillips Drysdale's Obituary
DALLAS, April 13, 2024 - Kathy Phillips Drysdale, beloved mother, sister, daughter, and aunt,
passed away peacefully on Friday, April 12 at the age of 53, surrounded by her family in Dallas,
Texas.
"Kathy was a pillar of strength and inspiration to all who knew her," said her son, Dereck Lively
II. "Her unwavering love and guidance shaped me into the person I am today. She fought
valiantly against cancer and adversity, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and determination."
A standout athlete for the Penn State Lady Lions from 1988 to 1992, Kathy was a Penn State
1,000-point club member, amassing 1,295 career points. She also distinguished herself as a
tenacious defender, securing 717 rebounds and tallying 89 blocks during her collegiate career.
Drysdale was integral to Penn State's historic rise to the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press
poll in 1991.
After earning her degree in general arts and sciences from Penn State in 1992, Kathy embarked
on a successful career in sports management. She worked for the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers
from 1993 to 2006, significantly contributing to game operations and marketing efforts. Kathy's
passion for sports and commitment to excellence earned her the respect of colleagues and
players.
In 2011, Kathy returned to her alma mater, joining the school’s athletic department as the
women’s basketball Marketing Manager. She oversaw marketing initiatives for women's
volleyball, wrestling, and softball, leaving an indelible mark across the department and
impacting nearly every sport program over 13 years. Kathy left Penn State Athletics in
November 2023 and moved to Dallas to support Dereck in his rookie season with the Dallas
Mavericks after being drafted in the first round of the 2023 NBA Draft.
Throughout her life, Kathy was a devoted mother and cherished friend. She leaves a legacy of
love, strength, and perseverance that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Kathy is
survived by her loving son Dereck, her mother Judy Phillips, her sisters Lisa Parker and Pattie
Gardner, and their families.
