Mable Albena McGee Bruce's Obituary
Mable Albena McGee Bruce was born September 28, 1926, to the parentage of the late Adron McGee and Gussie Eugene Baldwin in Bryan, Texas. She was the youngest child and has been preceded in death by her siblings, Ora Lee McGee Thomas, Sylvester McGee and Evelyn Beatrice McGee Goosby. Sis. Bruce transitioned Sunday, October 23, at the age of 96.
She married the love of her life, Payton C. Bruce, January 8, 1948. They had been married 66 years when he transitioned March 24, 2014. They were the parents of seven children, including Michael McGee Bruce who preceded them in death, and seven grandchildren, including three who preceded them in death, Jason Bruce Hardaway, Payton Kennedy Hardaway and Dena Young.
When she first moved to Dallas, Sis. Bruce affiliated with St. Paul United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. I.B. Loud. She also was a member of Aldersgate United Church under leadership of Rev. Marshall Hodge, before joining St. Luke United Methodist Church under the leadership of Dr. Zan Wesley Holmes Jr. in the early 1980s. Sis. Bruce remained there until 2005 when she became a Charter Member at what was the original extension of St. Luke, now known as The Village United Methodist Church under the leadership of Rev. Derek Jacobs.
Sis. Bruce came to Dallas, first employed as a domestic worker. She always wanted to better herself. She earned her GED, received training as a DR Technician and trained as a LVN Dallas Vocational Nurse from 1960 to 1966. She attended Bishop College before graduating from Southern Methods University in 1972 with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a master’s degree in Sociology from Texas Woman’s University in 1974.
During her career, Sis. Bruce worked as a scrub nurse and a charge nurse at several hospitals, including Garland Memorial Hospital, Scottish Rite and Baylor, before her retirement from Parkland Hospital in 2004. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Delta National Sociology Honor Society, Delta Chapter at Texas Woman’s University; and a member of the Order of The Eastern Star Charter, Masonic Grand Chapter, Prince Hall.
Survivors include four daughters, Terrie A. Bruce Britt ( Gerald ) Karen D. Bruce, Vera Jean Bruce Young and Christina Bruce; and two sons, Michael Bruce (Nicole) and Payton D. Bruce; four grandchildren, Carrie Britt Brown (Curtis), Adrienne C. Britt Williams (DeAndre), Steven Bruce, Isaac Holland III and John Young; four great-grandchildren, Brooklyn C. Berry, Kennedy P. Hardaway, Dayvion Carter and Amari Carter; her special nephew and niece, I.V. “Peter” and Laura Goosby; a host of other nephews, nieces and friends; and her amazing Church Family at The Village who meant the world to her.
