Mr. Michael Anthony Hopson's Obituary
Michael Anthony Hopson was born at Joint Base Andrews on August 5, 1961. He was the first of four children born to the late Clifford Hopson and the late Mary Delores Gupton. Affectionately called Anthony by his family, he was also fondly known as Hanny, Mike, and Hop. Mike was called Home on January 29, 2026, after a lengthy illness.
Mike attended Prince George’s County schools and was a proud member of DeMatha Catholic High School’s 1978 National Championship basketball team. He later graduated from Central High School in 1979. Following graduation, he joined the Prince George’s County Fire Department, where he served honorably until retiring on July 1, 1990. He took full advantage of a firefighter’s schedule, starting a landscaping business and holding part‑time corporate roles. After retiring from the fire department, he held positions with SkyTel, Inc., the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, and Lockheed Martin before fully retiring in 2013.
Growing up, Mike was rarely seen without a basketball in hand. It was his passion. Years after hanging up his Chuck Taylors, he accepted a challenge—laced with the claim that he had “lost his touch.” With a spark of competitiveness, he spotted his son AJ (then a teenager) and his wife Lynnée nine baskets in a game to ten—and still won. Creating joy, laughter, and memories came naturally to him.
Mike loved speed—whether on his boat on the Potomac River or on the open road. He had an enduring love for motorcycles and cars, rarely keeping one for more than two years. He was passionate about cooking and entertaining and was always ready to light the grill. He was happiest when surrounded by family and those he loved.
Brilliant and endlessly resourceful, Mike could fix, build, or make anything—and if he didn’t know how, he would learn. A trip to the garage with him could solve nearly any problem. He also loved to travel. After he and his wife became PADI‑certified SCUBA divers, at least one dive trip to the Caribbean each year became a cherished tradition.
Mike formed a special bond with Lynnée’s family and quickly became a beloved fixture at every gathering. No bond was more dear than the ones he shared with Anthony Lynard—whom he affectionately called Gus—and with Zaahira Lynard, his “8–5,” because they shared the same birthday.
Mike’s memory lives on through his wife, Lynnée Hopson; his son from a previous marriage, Anthony Jamal “AJ” Hopson; his brother Joseph Andre (Renee) Hopson; his sisters Rozetta Hopson and Anita (Baron) Jackson; nephews Andre (Susan) Hopson, Raschad Hopson, Kortlan Jackson, and Kyle Jackson; nieces Brittany (Barrington) Little and Kalyn Jackson; and great‑nephews Ari Hopson, Xion Josey‑Hopson, and Barrington Little Jr.; and great‑niece Kynsley Jackson.
His legacy of love, laughter, generosity, and unwavering strength will continue to live in the hearts of all who knew him.
