Mrs. Oma Darlene Sanders' Obituary
Oma Darlene (Hutchinson) Sanders was born October 16, 1938 to the late J. D. Hutchinson and Ruby E. (Lee) Hutchinson in Sulphur Springs (East Caney Community of Hopkins County), Texas.
Oma Darlene was raised by her great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Bonnie Raspberry. Oma Darlene was educated in public schools located in Sulphur Springs, TX. After graduating high school, she attended Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, TX. While there, she was a member of the choir and sang with a memorable, melodic soprano voice. Oma Darlene earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education in 1961.
Oma Darlene Hutchinson married David Odell Sanders on December 22, 1961. To their union, their only son, David Odell Sanders, Jr, was born.
Mrs. Sanders worked in numerous administrative roles including Central Office Administration, Financial Aid, and the Registrar’s office. Among her primary employers were Sulphur Springs ISD (Douglas High School); Southern Methodist University; Bishop College; Dallas ISD (DISD School Administration, Adamson High School, Lincoln High School, and Robert L. Thornton Elementary School); Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, TX; Paul Quinn College in Dallas; and Garland ISD.
Mrs. Sanders accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at a young age. She was raised as a member of the East Caney Missionary Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs, TX. After she married David Odell Sanders, Sr., they became members of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church where she served in the following roles: Deaconess, Children’s Ministry Director, Missionary Society, Children’s Choir musician, and Vacation Bible School Director among others. She faithfully served in ministry for 22 years at Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. These experiences were an asset later when her husband, who had become an ordained minister, began to pastor Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Together, they served at Pleasant Hill in Wills Point, Texas from 1982 to 1992. A few years later, the Lord had a different assignment, she served as first lady of Union Chapel Baptist Church in Omaha, Texas. After serving at Union Chapel, Rev. Sanders’ health declined and after 53 years of marriage, he died in August 2015.
Oma Darlene Sanders is preceded in death by her parents, J.D. Hutchinson and Ruby E. (Lee) Sims; her sister, Lillie L. (Hutchinson) Hutchins; and her husband, Rev. David O. Sanders, Sr. Leaving behind to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted son, Rev. David O. Sanders, Jr. and his wife Jennifer; her granddaughter, Elisabeth L. Sanders; special nephews, nieces and cousins, Kevin Spain, Cedric Spain, Nina Cook, Michael Lee, Gwen Guye {Tommy), Sheila Mathis, and Yvette Mathis-Devereaux; and a host of other relatives, church and family friends.
