I met Tom when I joined SAE fraternity in 1976. While pledging I looked up to him and chose him as my big brother. We kept in touch until he left Tampa and went to Tx. The last time I spoke to him was just before Turners graduation. Today, 6-10-19 I thought about giving him a call but I could not find his number. So I tried to find it on line and that's when I could not believe what I discovered. He had passed on my birthday. I remember Tina,Chris,Joe and Turner when they lived in Tampa. I will miss his gift of gab and his friendship and memories I will never forget. Condolences to his family. I know he will be missed. Fraternally, Your Little Brother. You are now Phi Alpha

Tom was my first cousin on my mother's side of the Gaines family. My mother was Clara Gaines Owens, and a retired school teacher. Tom, Jim and I grew up in Kingsport, TN. Our great grandparents were Elbert and Mattie Jane Poore who raised my mother and Tom's dad, Bert Gaines, in the Rock Springs area of Kingsport. I spent 34 years in the Atlanta area and after retiring, came back to Kingsport to live with my current husband. I talked to Tom very seldom, but I have fond memories of our growing up. Jim let me know of Tom's passing and I truly wish he had not been so stubborn. And that we could have known Joe, Tina, and Turner. My deepest sympathies to the whole family.
