HER LIFE, LOVE, & LEGACY

ECCLESIASTES 3:1-2
On July 12, 1920, was the beginning of a life that was to influence, nurture, and cultivate. It marked the birth of Verna Mae, the daughter of Daisy Mae Mays and Sam Mays. She was born in Trinidad, Texas and later resided in Maysfield, Texas. She was the first of nine children born to this union.
“THAT IF YOU CONFESS WITH YOUR MOUTH, JESUS IS LORD….” ROMANS 10:9
At an early age, Verna Mae accepted Christ and was baptized in a creek in Trinidad, Texas. Her family stressed the importance of going to church and participating in many church ministries.
“THEY SHALL BE ONE FLESH….” GENESIS 2:24
With her virtue and warm spirit, Verna attracted the attention of C. J. Jackson. On December 23, 1936, she married C. J. Jackson and moved to Sweetwater, Texas. This union was blessed with one child, Una Merle. Verna Mae was a devoted mother and instilled Godly morals and values in Una Merle’s life. She worked diligently to provide for her only child.

Verna Mae was a dedicated Christian woman who loved her church, Greater Zion Baptist Church in Sweetwater, Texas. She was the Sunday School superintendent for many years. Verna Mae organized the Youth Department and was the president of the Mission Society. She continuously organized various fundraisers for the church. Verna Mae was instrumental in raising funds for the first organ at the church.
“MOREOVER, IT IS REQUIRED IN STEWARDS THAT A MAN BE…” I CORINTHIANS 4:2
Verna Mae was a trailblazer where she worked diligently to ensure that children in the community were given a fair and equal education; thereby, integrating public schools. She was actively involved in various school activities such as the local PTA. Verna Mae organized a social club for young mothers in the community.
With all her involvement, Verna Mae managed to begin her career as a cook for Allen’s Chicken Café. Later, she worked as a domestic worker for Dr. June Young’s Family for many years.
Verna Mae knew the importance of education and enrolled in Texas State Technical School of Nursing. In 1970, she graduated with a nursing degree and worked at Rolling Plains Hospital until her retirement in 2001.

Cooking was a first love of Verna Mae. She loved to serve others with a luscious meal, always wanting to ensure that guests were comfortable. She would go that extra mile to make you feel comfortable. Verna Mae was the “Hostess with the Mostess”! If she were here today, Verna Mae would say, “ Come over here and take a nap! What can I cook for you to eat?” She was known for her sweet potato pies, peach cobbler, dressing, and cherry pies.
Verna Mae enjoyed fishing. She would tell Una Merle that she had to fish for her supper. In addition, she enjoyed gardening. Verna Mae had a green thumb and grew some of the largest turnips.
Verna Mae loved fashion and she was a fashion icon. She loved to wear beautiful clothing and fabulous hats.

On July 24 , 2020 at 2:20 a.m. after a fruitful life of 100 years, a golden heart stopped beating, as Verna Mae Jackson(York) crossed out of time into eternity.
“AND GOD SHALL WIPE AWAY ALL TEARS FROM THEIR EYES…. “ REVELATION 21:4
Verna Mae went on to Glory to the Holy City of the New Jerusalem!
“I HAVE FOUGHT A GOOD FIGHT, I HAVE FINISHED MY COURSE….” II TIMOTHY 4:7
Preceding her in death is her husbands, CJ Jackson and Moses York, mother Daisy Mays Barrs, father Sam Mays. Brothers, Alonzo Barrs, Matthew Barrs, Wilbert Barrs, Greal Barrs, William Barrs, Brady Barrs. Sister, Hortence Davis.
Left to celebrate a legacy of Christian and family values are one daughter, Una Merle Evans-Walton (Dorse Walton) Grand Prairie, Texas
Grand children, Jonathan Donyale Jackson Evans, Isha Dayan Jackson Evans. Great grand children, Breylon Morris, Breyn Morris, Bryce Williams, Samara Evans and Josiah Evans. One sister, Sammie Bell Lane (Arthur), Crane, Texas. One brother, Orgarine Barrs, Austin, Texas. Many nieces and nephews.
